Change in Leadership Puts Komodo Island On the Map

Komodo Island is one of the most beautiful places on our planet, and yet for decades it’s remained in near obscurity.  As a result, Komodo has missed out on significant tourist revenue.  Fast forward to 2014 when, now-president, Joko Widodo was elected to office.  With this election, President Widodo quickly developed a plan to put beautiful Komodo on the international map.

1. Improving Infrastructure Opens Up Demand

The movie field of dreams famously coined, “If you build it they will come.”  However, with no real infrastructure, the beauty of Komodo Island remained a secret.  International tourists, and their wallets, poured into more accessible locations like Hawaii, Phucket, Bali and more.  

Upon being elected, President Widodo got to work on building a new airport in Komodo.  This airport immediately opened up the region to international visitors.  Most importantly though, the airport was designed to scale in size as visitor demand grows over time.  Businesses need to ensure their immediate, mid-term and long-term business strategies are cohesively aligned for optimal success.

2. Focus on Culture

How a country, or a businesses defines culture, let along tries to reshape it can be a daunting task.  Andre shares how Singapore did just this by reshaping portions of their culture.  This change helped Singapore to become a leading financial hub within Asia.  

3. Marketing, Marketing, Marketing

President Widodo understood that a strong marketing plan was needed in order to see a positive return on the airport investment.  If you’re going to invest in your products or services you need to ensure that you have the right business plan in place to capitalize on it.
